I think coach has been working with him on going up off of 2 feet instead of 1 so he can change his direction a little before running into someone. Either way I like that he is trying to get in there and make something happen.

He's had charges called on him every which way, including trying to avoid the defender. And you're incorrect about the bolded part...if the defender is not set, they are not entitled to that space. The offensive player can't extend to create additional space (the way Jenifer draws player control fouls), but Cumberland doesn't do that. Attacking the chest of the defender who has no right to the space bc they are out of position is exactly what he should be taught to do. Not his fault that his size causes a more violent collision. But the situation you are describing is essentially the definition of a blocking foul, so long as the offensive player isn't extending to move them off the space. And with the NCAA "stressing" freedom of movement, Cumberland should get the benefit of the doubt on those calls.

Galen Robinson from Houston had 8 of the first 14 and was 4-4 shooting. Then Cumberland ran him over and he didnt score the rest of the game. Sometimes offensive fouls like that can be a good thing haha

I'll take a charge over standing outside and shooting jumpers. Lot of times offensive will get that call

Yeah of course we all get mad when it's a charge but really at least he's being aggressive.

If you're looking for a good KenPom comparison to this year's UC team that has won a title, look no further than 2014 UConn.

2014 UConn: 113.0 AdjO (39), 90.9 AdjD (10)
2017 Cincy: 113.1 AdjO (42), 90.6 AdjD (7)

Those numbers for UConn also include their 6 NCAA Tournament wins.

Not trying to mislead or get people hyped, but seriously, anything can happen in the NCAA Tournament. I love March so much.

watch how good Cumberland is at moving laterally off his last step so the defender is not in position for the charge. the defender is late often on Cumberland but they are still called chargers and i think it's because of Cumberlands size. That isn't dribbling into the chest of a defender, that is forcing the defender to move late and run his chest into you. That isn't the same as lowering your shoulder and running a guy over (which I agree is a charge).

I dont think the defenders or the refs give Cumberland credit for how quick he actually is with the ball in his hands.

And the "anything can happen" thing is never more true than with that Uconn team. If St. Joes hits a shot at the end of regulation Uconn is out in the 1st round. That is how close it can be.

Exactly. But this doesn't mean he isn't allowed to draw contact with someone who isn't in defensive position in the space where the contact happens. There a difference (most of the time) between what Cumberland does, and going out of your way to initiate the collision. Usually when Cumberland gets a charge it's when he's heading in a straight line to the hoop, and doesn't deviate from that path. Not his fault if someone gets in his way when they aren't entitled to the space bc they aren't in position. That's why it grinds my gears.
