'19 CA PF Kenyon Martin Jr.

Kenyon Martin Jr. (KJ Martin) is playing his first year of high school basketball as a sophomore at Chaminade in West Hills, CA. He's about 6'6" 185 lbs. but he and his dad say he's still growing and will be around Kenyon's height. From what I've gathered he's raw but can hit 3's, drive the lane and he's already a very good shot blocker.

Hopefully he turns himself into a top 150 type of player and his dad steers him to his alma mater.

Here's three little small highlights I've found on him. Wears #4 just like his pops.

Exactly!! KJ looks like he has the build and skill set of his father, obviously more raw though. If he can get to 6'8"-6'9" and continue to develop he's going to be a great player.

Going to be a lot harder to get him than ppl realize

I dont think we have any idea at this point. Maybe he wants nothing more than to follow in his father's footsteps. Maybe he wants no part of having to play in that shadow. Each kid comes with obstacles and things that are advantageous to UC. It's the staff's job to filter through those and make the determination about fit and likelihood of the kid coming to UC. Kmart Jr. is no different. Our "in" with him could be a huge advantage or it could be the reason why we dont have a chance. It's probably somewhere in between.

And right in the middle of that between is Huggins.

Definitely ouch. Hopefully dad can change his mind about his dream school lol

Kid has a lot of work to do just to qualify let alone get into Duke. He looks to be a great talent. Hope he gets his act together.

GarradJ21 01-05-2017 07:59 AM

I'm so sick of Duke/UK. Why don't these kids dream to be different. I give Ben Simmons credit for going to LSU.

Does he have terrible grades or something?

Was going to ask the same thing. Hopefully not trouble with the law too.

While basketball skills weren’t a question for the son of the 2004 NBA All-Star who retired last year, effort in school was quite a different story. Martin Jr.’s first report card had a 0.6 grade point average, and he wasn’t turning in his homework. Martin Sr. also said his son had an attitude problem and was not taking care of responsibilities at home.

Huggins. fit in at WV

kskenyon4 01-05-2017 03:25 PM

Kenyon Sr. doesn't want him at UC, have to face the pressure of following in his footsteps.

This type of info shouldn't be public.

They made it public when they agreed to be interviewed for the story and publicly commented on his grades.

Your comment has not been confirmed anywhere and is strictly an opinion. I don't see anything showing Kenyon pushing him to UC but I also don't see anything with Kenyon pushing him away. It's still very early in his recruiting.

Those who follow recruiting for UC and nation-wide have said it....

I have spoken to several folks who are pretty close to the program and follow recruiting closely (recently), and, while I don't think he will come here, no one has said to me that Kenyon Sr. is an obstacle and I asked that question directly.

The belief is grades and the fact that the kid is a west coast kid is more of an obstacle than where his father went to school or who his coach was.

Lot of time before he commits anywhere, I heard fairly recently that Kenyon Sr had an opinion on the matter, and it was what I said.

With that said, I continue to hope there is movement in Sr's life in regards to becoming a coach on some level from now until 2019. That could become a big factor.

That was another question I asked and that seems to be the wildcard. If Kenyon Sr. becomes a coach somewhere, that could have a big influence on his son's decision. Will be interesting. In the mean time, I will continue to wish the kid well and wish, for just a second, that I could jump and dunk like that. :D

From what I recall, his grades recovered once Kenyon laid the hammer down? It certainly seems like a yellow flag, but 14/15 year old kid will make a mistake or 2. I will temper my hopes he ever highly considers UC, but seeing him play anywhere else in the country would sting.

Kenyon was on campus several times last year - need him back around again! I had a glimmer of hope he would be at the Tulane game, since he was the ticket person, but no dice.

Kenyon was the Grand Marshal of the Homecoming Parade this year. He was working with the big guys some last year. He is trying to be at his son's games and the vast majority of them are in California. His opportunity to be in Cincinnati is limited at this time. It is what it is. I wouldn't read anything into it.

UCalum08 01-05-2017 05:16 PM

I get the notion of him not coming to UC because of the added pressure. But you have to think, wherever he goes, he is always going to be identified as Kenyon Martin's kid. You would think even more so if he goes to WVU. But, a lot of time before any of that happens.

No idea if that "warm" interest is just 247 trying to piece the dots together of if there actually is something brewing. I think all of us would be ecstatic if this happened

Here is a little highlight video of him and Scottie Pippen's son. They both play for Sierra Canyon now. The video also shows highlights of the other team, but definitely like Kenyon's highlights.

You are correct I get my wildcats mixed up from time to time, but none the less Kmart2.0 looked damn good, he’s a junior so he’s still got time to fill out his body, and I realize it may be a long shot to get him, but I can’t imagine it’s impossible
