The Wes Miller Era

Time for a new thread leaving the drama behind. Let's try to keep this one current/forward looking, and put opinions about the hire or what happened elsewhere.

It looks like assistant Chris LePore may be following Miller from UNCG. He was apparently responsible for recruiting and player development. A young guy who has been with Wes almost from the beginning. I'd like to see him fill out his staff with some high major/pro and local experience.

I’d like a uc guy on staff but I get it if not. You want guys you know and he might not know them. I’ve seen nothing but positives about the guy. Hard not to get excited

Appears to be a great hire. Let's go.

Does Wes have anybody he can bring with him?

Keyshaun Langley will be a Jr. 34.5% 3 point shooter his first 2 years on 267 attempts. Classified as a scoring PG. 23.1 assist rate and 18.5 TOrate. Projected to be a 3.2 PRPG! guys next year.

Mohammed Abdulsalam is a 6'9 23.7 DR and 15.4 OR guy.

Jarrett Hensley was a 4 star recruit from last year. 6-7 stretch 4. Didn't play much or play that well as a freshman.

Isaiah Miller is his claim to fame. He entered draft but could follow him to improve draft status. If Isaiah doesn’t follow or McMillan/rayvon don’t commit this hire was weak

It’s a 7’1 C on their roster also

If he could get Miller here and get his usage back down to around 25 instead of 35-37 where its been the last 2 years that would be a great move.

Isaiah Miller has one of my favorite stats from last year, and its the fact that he took 258 midrange shots all by himself. Nobody on the roster could shoot, so he must have been forced into them by sagging defenders.

He’s at his best when other studs put around him. Might want call up Keith Williams see if come back. Him and Miller would be one of best backcourt in college

Here's a full game of the SoCo tournament final (Mercer vs UNCG) from this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHC4...eforBasketball

My notes.

Defense:
The good: They play a very switch heavy man-to-man, sometimes it morphs into a zone. At times it starts to look a bit like Cronin's matchup zone. They play tight to the man with the ball pretty much everywhere on the court. Have a lot of smaller guards who pressure their man hard (Saunders would fit in). Do pretty well at stopping backcuts. The pressure seems to cause a lot of mistakes. They collapse hard on the ball when it gets into the interior. Draw a fair number of charges.

The bad: Big men aren't the most athletic, probably a product of what Miller could get at UNCG. Getting them switched onto a small guy leads to problems. Like we saw with Cronin, if you're going to run a system that regularly gets your big switched onto a guard, your big better be an elite athlete (like Tari). They are somewhat vulnerable to the drive and kick because of how hard they collapse the paint. Overall very good on defense.

Offense:
The good: They attack early and then pull it out if nothing is there. Get good shots early when the defense isn't fully set. Big men (and others) crash the boards hard. Drive-and-kick offense. Get a lot of good shots early in the shot clock. A lot of guys who can drive the ball. Get a fair number of open looks from three. Run the offense through their best player (Miller).

The bad: Take a lot of bad quick trigger threes. Shot selection (especially in the middle of the shot clock) is not very good. Big men aren't very skilled on the interior. Ball doesn't move all that fast. Late shot clock execution not all that impressive. Don't shoot (even open shots) particularly well from three.
