UC Women's Basketball

After meeting LaRita Wilcher and Todd Moore (asst. coaches) last night, I realized that BCT is doing a huge disservice to them. The coverage is non-existent here, and that's not doing our part to Rep the C.

Article from Betsy Ross about awards dinner...

So the cap finally has been put on the 2009-2010 UC women's basketball season, with last Sunday's team dinner and awards ceremony on March 28.

Those of you who have followed UC's women's basketball team know that it's been a while since there's been a post-season ceremony honoring the team, so it was good to have that tradition return.

For the record, honors went to Kahla Roudebush, most valuable player; Michelle Jones, most improved player; Shareese Ulis, unsung hero award; and Carla Jacobs, defensive player of the year.

All awards were very well deserved, and the Bearcat program will miss Kahla, Michelle and Carla, along with the rest of the seniors, who are moving on 'to find their life's work,' as Paul Brown would say.

But you know who deserves their own award? Their own standing ovation? The parents, the friends, and the family members who were at that dinner and were at countless games, cheering these young women on.

I've talked before about the support these families give the student-athletes, but sometimes we forget that it means driving long hours in bad weather to watch a basketball game, it means lost sleep getting back home late, and it means short weekends after a game.

At Sunday's dinner I saw parents, grandparents, friends, and family. They were all there to honor these women who are the first, the foundation, of the Jamelle Elliott era. And let's face it, the student-athlete gets all of the awards, the applause, the accolades, but let's save some of that applause for the families who give up a lot so that their daughters can enjoy the opportunities to play a game they love.

It means a lot for these young women to be able to look up in the stands and see their families cheering them on—not just in basketball, but in life. We say goodbye to these players, but we know that, with the support of their friends and families, they'll be just as successful off the court as on. Best of luck.

Another piece by her on next year..

Third, Shareese Ulis can be such a skilled quarterback on the court. It's obvious that Coach Elliott trusted her, since she handed Shareese the keys to the offense right off the bat and she will be fun to watch next season.

And I'm excited for the future of Val Schuster. Yes, maybe it's just because I like announcing her name in the starting lineup (Val Schooooooooooster..) but I like her hustle and her outside shooting touch. I hope she continues to grow in Coach Elliott's system.

Which brings us to next season, and the first full recruiting class that Coach Elliott will have had time to bring in.Junior college transfer ShaQuanda Wiggins (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Township/Jefferson College [Mo.]) will join incoming freshmen Kayla Cook (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster), Jeanise Randolph (Calumet City, IL/Thornton Fractional North), and Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) at UC for the 2010-11 season. These four run 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 and 5-10, bringing some height inside, and add them with redshirting transfer Chanel Chisholm (Long Island, N.Y./North Babylon/Vanderbilt), who transferred from Vanderbilt following the 2008-09 season and who has watched the offense from the bench this year, and you should have a good mix of youth and experience.

May 25, 2010

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball program has added three student-athletes to its 2010 recruiting class, second-year head coach Jamelle Elliott announced today (May 25).

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to add three quality student-athletes in the late signing period,” said Elliott. “They are each skilled players, good students, and strong competitors.”

LaShay Banks (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter), Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods/Michigan), and Bjonee Reaves (San Bernardino, Calif./Cajon/Neosho County [Kan.] C.C.) will join the Bearcats roster for the 2010-11 season. Hollins, a Cincinnati native and 2009 graduate of Winton Woods High School, will sit out the 2010-11 season in compliance with NCAA transfer regulations after spending the 2009-10 season at Michigan. Banks and Reaves will be immediately eligible for the Bearcats.

Banks is a 5-10 shooting guard from Philadelphia who earned Philadelphia Public League Player of the Year honors as a senior and scored 987 career points as a prep.

Hollins, who was a standout at Winton Woods and one of the top players in the greater Cincinnati area during her prep career, had a successful freshman campaign at Michigan. She started in 34 of 35 games, averaging 12.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists, while earning a spot on the All-Big Ten Freshman Team.

Reaves comes to UC from Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kan., where she was the fifth-leading scorer in the NJCAA last season, averaging 20.6 points per contest. The 5-6 point guard was a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association honorable mention all-America selection at Yavapai College following the 2008-09 season.

The trio joins a quartet of early signees: Kayla Cook (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster), Jeanise Randolph (Calumet City, Ill./Thornton Fractional North), Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), and ShaQuanda Wiggins (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Township/Jefferson College [Mo.]). Chanel Chisholm (Long Island, N.Y./North Babylon/Vanderbilt), a transfer from Vanderbilt, will be eligible for the Bearcats this season after sitting out the 2009-10 campaign in compliance with NCAA transfer guidelines.

“Bjonee, Dayeesha, and LaShay, along with the four student-athletes we signed in the fall, provide a solid foundation upon which to continue the growth of the UC women’s basketball program,” Elliott said. “The group has a bright future ahead we are excited to welcome them to the Bearcats family.”

This completes the seven that the UC women Asst Coaches were alluding to at the UC Caravan. They are serious about competing in the Big East, and feel the team will be much more athletic and long.
