Houston Part II

Sunday, March 10th, 2019

Fifth Third Arena

The Opponent

Houston Cougars: 28-2 (15-2 AAC), #6 NET

What's at Stake

With a win the Bearcats (25-5, 14-3 AAC, #23 NET) would clinch a share of the AAC regular season title with Houston. The Bearcats would also earn the #2 seed in next week's AAC conference tournament in Memphis. A loss and a UCF win over Temple would give the Bearcats the #3 seed in the AAC tournament.

A win over Houston would give the Bearcats their best win of the year for their NCAA tournament resume and another valuable Q1 win for their team sheet. The Bearcats are currently 4-3 in Q1 match-ups this year.

Last Match-up

Houston defeated Cincinnati 65-58 on February 10th at the Fertitta Center. The Bearcats led by 1 point with just over 6 minutes to go in the game before Houston would end the game on a 8-0 run holding the Bearcats scoreless.

Key Players and Stats

Corey Davis is a conference player of the year candidate. He has shot 26/51 from 3 (51%) since facing UC a month ago. Teammate Armoni Brooks has shot 23/46 from 3 (50%) over that same timespan.

The Cougars are the best overall 3-point shooting team in the AAC as well as the top rebounding team. They rank 8th nationally in rebounding margin (+7.6/game)

Jarron Cumberland, the Bearcats leading scorer and AAC POY candidate, is 1/16 from 3 over his last 4 games.

The Bearcats have won 16 consecutive home games.

Senior guard Justin Jenifer has won 104 games over his 4 game career.

Outlook

Game of the Year in the AAC. I'm confident we'll send Justin and Cane out right in a close hard-fought win.

Sadly I think it is doubtful we will win this. Over the last several games teams have shown they can be successful in smothering Jaron. Cronin hitched his wagon to JJ early in the season and hasn’t looked back even though we have seen him wilt against high major competition all year. Cane is very good but is definitely the spark off the bench and not the instigator we need in the starting PG. I think our only hope is that Tre plays like a monster beyond what we think he is capable of like at UCF but more so. With home court advantage if JJ can make a few tres which he has not been able to do the last couple games we have a shot. A win could not be overstated in terms of its significance- it would be spectacular in what we thought was an off year and place this team in the eschaton of bearcat greatness. If we loose we still exceeded expectations this year so I am proud of the team either way. One thing for sure - they will battle on Sunday.

So... A noon tip time for a central time zone team means this is starting at 11am for their own time. Tack on spring forward last night for daylight savings and this game is basically starting at 10 am from Houston's perspective.

I think that's a nice break for us

Let's go! 65-62 Cats is my prediction.
