Agree the shot selection is an issue- drives me crazy when
Shooters don’t square up & step into the shot . When there’s no

Davenport.
A lot of the time it wasn't getting beat 1v1, it was horrible defense against screens. That's a matter of communication, scheme and a willingness to be tough and fight through the screen as much or more as a lack of athleticism. We've seen undisciplined athletes (Memphis) get destroyed by disciplined team players. Samson saw something in our pick-and-roll defense that he knew he could go after and we had no solution.

That's not to say there isn't need for improvement. Davenport's 1v1 defense was abysmal tonight, he got beat off the drive by both the bigger White and smaller guards. Saunders continues to struggle guarding despite his quickness. The list could go on.

I'm not saying I don't want better athletes. But I think inexperience in Miller's system and Miller not having the time to implement everything is just as big of a factor (if not a bigger one). Hopefully it's inexperience and not poor coaching, otherwise we have a whole different problem.

Guys like Ody, Lakhin, Newman, Hensley and even MAW have the size and athletic ability to play with Houston. And a less athletic guy can do a lot if they are smart and tough (Davenport for example could manage it in theory). What they lack is experience and cohesion and that only comes with time.

This was a cobbled together roster of a first year coach against the well oiled machine of a great coach who has been at the same school for a long time. Better athletes would not have won us the game last night, we also need more experienced players, players who fit the system and Miller needs more time to implement his system.
