Indiana coach Tom Crean and Louisville coach Rick Pitino were in attendance for the Wednesday's Ivy Tech Downtown Showdown at Conseco Fieldhouse. Crean was there for both North Central's 80-51 win over Brownsburg and Pike's 62-58 overtime win over Lawrence North, presumably to see both North Central sophomore D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Pike junior Marquis Teague. Louisville is also among the schools Teague is considering; he also has commitments from Lawrence North juniors Michael Chandler and Ryan Taylor.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, North Central: The 6-3 sophomore was very active early, hitting a couple of jumpers in the lane in the first quarter. Brownsburg had a tough time stopping him around the basket, as he hit 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and finished with 16 points. Like Johnson, he didn't play much in the second half. He was 5-for-10 from the field.

How they fared: top players at State (3/28/10)

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, North Central: Warsaw had no one to match up with the 6-4 sophomore and he burned the Tigers for 16 points in the first half on 6-for-7 shooting. He didn't score the rest of the game, missing three shots, but it didn't matter at that point. The primary question about Smith-Rivera seems to be, 'With his body style, how much better can he get?" I understand it. He is physically mature for a sophomore. But that doesn't have to impede his development. He will become more of the primary option next year with Terone Johnson graduating. He has offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier.

The 6-4 Smith-Rivera has offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier. Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl was at North Central this week, Panthers coach Doug Mitchell said.

Playing AAU with a very good team (Indiana Elite). Made outside shots as well as going inside in helping his team when against the Illinois Wolves.

"One of the best games of the day came in the semi-finals of the 16-and under level where Ohio Basketball Club topped Indiana Elite. While OBC came out on top, it was D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera who stole the show with 28 points, almost all of them when his team needed him.

Smith-Rivera is a ball dominant combo guard who is a very good passer, but quite simply he is at his best going to the rim and getting buckets. There might not be a player at his age level who does a better job of getting to the foul line, and once he got there Smith-Rivera kept hitting one clutch free throw after another. Add in that he made threes, and the hard working Indianapolis native is beginning to prove some of the doubters wrong about his game."

Smith-Rivera has always benefited from being much stronger than his competition. However, the 6-foot-3 combo wasn't always in the best of shape. This spring, he looks much more lean and the result is a mean guard who can punish defenders physically. He shifts speeds with ease, has a crafty feel for the game and is a much better shooter from deep than he's been given credit for. Clearly, he's a high major prospect.

Joining Perea with a solid performance was D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera. The Indianapolis native continued his excellent spring with his play on Saturday. After struggling some with his outside shot at the beginning of the season, Smith-Rivera has caught fire from deep and is now a very reliable shooter. He is still at his best going to the rim using his power and great ability to change speeds, but now that the perimeter jumper keeps defenders honest he is even tougher to deal with.
