Atmosphere

I've been going to hoops games across the country for over 40 years, and have seen games from Georgetown's small gym (before they moved to a big arena) to Final Fours. I have had some great experiences, and seen some shows around the game that have been really good. Now that I live in Cincy, I wanted to know what you are most proud of about your house?

What are your favorite things about the experience at a game at 5/3 other than the game itself? Anything stand out?
And to be fair, other than the sitelines, what is your least favorite part of going to a game? Any thing you just can't stand?

Finally, have you been to another college arena that just blew you away with its experience?

Thanks.

I went to KU for a year and went to all the basketball games. Also got to do a Coke Zero commercial in Allen Fieldhouse. That atmosphere is pretty special.

I guess the smell of pizza is pretty great but other than the actual physical atmosphere at the game, I never really notice anything else going on. Well, sometimes there are guys drumming barrels on the way out for cointossers.

Donny, in the 90s and early 2000s, I would put the atmosphere of this arena up against the best in the nation. It was electric. Today, we get one or two games a year where it approaches what we once had, but in general, the atmosphere sucks, mainly becuse attendance is way down. I know it can achieve those levels again, with or without an upgrade to the arena, but it will take one of those special teams playing a brand of basketball that excites fans before that happens again. I think we're getting very close to a surge in attendance and one of those kind of teams I speak of.

L-T I couldn-t agree more. I'm just glad we have mick to help lead the way.

At it's best, the atmosphere of 5/3 is great. The crosstown shootout on campus is a madhouse. The passion and excitement is high and the noise easily trumps a lot of the bigger, nicer arenas in the region.

The downside is simple. The above happens 3-4 times a year now and the rest of the time it falls pretty far. I have noticed this year seems slightly improved over the last few, but the Nov/Dec games and sometimes even January against weaker opponents are just your typical ncaab game. Nothing more or less than what you'd expect.

The UCONN, X and Memphis games are must attend live events for me.

Donny:

I've always liked the beer sales at UC games. I understand a number of schools do not allow beer sales. Now the university has added craft beers including Rivertown. That adds to the experience.
