Mick a Candidate for UNLV?
y MARK ANDERSON
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL Cincinnati basketball coach Mick Cronin has emerged as a candidate for the vacant UNLV job, sources said Saturday. Cronin has a 207-129 record in 10 seasons at Cincinnati. He has taken the Bearcats to six NCAA Tournaments in a row, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2012. Before Cincinnati, he was the coach at Murray State from 2004 to 2006, compiling a record of 69-24. Two of those three seasons ended in trips to the NCAAs. Cronin, 44, also has coached under Rick Pitino at Louisville and Bob Huggins at Cincinnati, learning the importance of putting together tough, physical teams. UNLV has struggled in such matchups against Mountain West rival San Diego State. Cincinnati’s season ended Friday with a 78-76 NCAA Tournament loss to Saint Joseph’s, so UNLV could move quickly if it decides to seriously pursue Cronin. He also could work out a contract extension with the Bearcats, a source said. The Bearcats stuck by Cronin, an alumnus of the school and a Cincinnati native, when he was forced to miss most of the 2014-15 season because of arterial dissection, a vascular condition. http://m.reviewjournal.com/unlv-bask...medium=twitter Could L-T get his wish? |

I couldn't see Cronin leaving these guys. He has some serious talent, and some great ambassadors for the program.

Lived out west for many years. One of my favorite teams was the runnin rebels. Tark was a great coach. Took on the NCAA. That town is starving for a winner. In the day they were absolutely crazy for the rebels. Thomas and Mack arena is a nice facility. Town host many high school prospect games in the summer. I'm sure they are capable of laying a bunch of money on him.

Mick isn't going anywhere. I'm sure this is one of those times where his agent floated his name out there to get some pub. Maybe use it as leverage, though I don't think it will work in this case. It's UNLV for christ sake. It's also obvious from his post game comments that he pays attention to what the fan base says so maybe he is feeling the heat (even though he isn't on the hot seat) from the fans and is trying to turn it. Mick may have some interest from very low level P5 schools or some mid-majors but that's about it.
Either way, would there be a worse fit in college basketball than the UNLV "Runnin Rebels" and Mick? They may have to change their nickname. |
