UTEP, SMU and Houston interested in MWC

08:14 AM ET 01.02 | The MWC may not be done yet. Why stop at 11? With the feeble state of the Big East and a wide-open lane to take control of the smaller conference realm, the Mountain West has room to get aggressive after Boise State decided to stay in the Mountain West and eschew the Big East. Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson said [Monday] the league has been in talks with 3-5 teams. San Diego State -- which originally planned to join the Big East in a package deal with Boise -- is one of them. A league source says UTEP, SMU and Houston have recently shown interest in becoming members. BYU is the biggest prize available, but the Cougars seem committed to independence -- at least for now.

San Diego State is number 12 for the MWC.

How is it in shambles? If UC and UConn do not get an invite to the ACC or Big 12 or Big 10 an all sports conference consisting of UC, UConn, Temple, Memphis, Tulane, USF, UCF, East Carolina, Houston, and SMU is clearly superior to the Boise+11, MAC, C-USA, and Sunbelt. This new Big East would get a TV contract larger than any of the lesser 4 conferences. The BB would be far superior to any of the lesser 4 conferences.

Something I never hear mentioned but I'm curious because of it's market size, are we so sure we're a more attractive fit for the ACC than South Florida?

Because of Florida State and Miami, ACC will not make that move. USF and the Tampa market are not lucrative enough for the ACC to want them with better universities to the north and south.

I feel for them though. I think UC and UConn will be fine after all of this, but it's hard to imagine USF not being out in the cold.

What if Florida State leaves? They are the most likely candidate to be poached. Another Florida team would make sense at that point.

But if BOTH Miami and Florida State leave, there is no reason to take USF. No natural rivalries, and that would lead UC and UCCON to the ACC.

If and when sdsu, Houston and smu leave, we are down to uc, ul, Memphis, uconn, usf and temple. Even if Houston and smu stay, there's no way well get a tv deal of any significance. Factor in uc, uconn and usf publicly want out, it's as unstable as a league can get

With no invites to ACC or Big 12 for UConn or UC it will be this. SDSU will stay in MWC, Houston and SMU will stay in Big East. The Big East will have 10 schools in an all sports confernce, UC, UConn, Temple, Memphis, USF, UCF, Houston, SMU, East Carolina, Tulane. This will be the #6 conference, first one below the Big10, Big12, SEC, PAC, and ACC. It's TV contract will pay more than the MWC, MAC, Sunbelt, or C-USA. Thus, without an invite to the ACC or Big12, this is the conference that UC should and will be in.

Any conference below the Power 5 is not going to great, but the Big East gives UC the best chance to get the BCS game that is guaranteed to the highest ranked Gang of 5 team and it is a decent basketball conference.

Ralph for the time being I have no problem with your shortterm senarrio. But make no mistake about it. The Cats will be ACC bound sooner rather than later. It is a no brainer.

Mick said on his radio show last night that the Big10 and SEC will each take 2 of the current ACC teams, opening 4 spots in the ACC. I hope he is correct and he has "insider" knowledge.
