Seems like a role player, not exactly another Anthony Davis.

I wonder if this says something about Gaines? He needs to have a good year. This is his sophomore year (3rd year in program) so I think he needs at least show significant improvement to justify keeping him.

Former WVU commit. Gives them some size up front. I do believe it shows some concern about low post depth, especially at the 5.

bearcat jeff...what do you think?
7-1 is nice. Looks like he can move and he keeps the ball high, which should not be taken for granted. Of course, this is based on a 1:16 video clip. |

He knows how to finish around the rim and isn't afraid of contact. He lifts up at all and there's basically no point in trying to block him. The athleticism and that height are impressive. His blocking ability isn't too shabby, it shouldn't be given his height. I like this pick up. I like it a lot. A lot of the bigs we're chasing are 6'8 or shorter, when this kind of player is available, the potential alone is well worth it. At the least, I'm confident he'll make things hard for the other team in the paint. |

Frankly, I'm a little surprised but there is some upside I believe. Good potential as a rebounder, and weak side shot blocker. He has a nice over the shoulder shot and does a really good job using his length and body to keep defenders off him. Lack of strength has always been an issue for him. With teams like Louisville loading up on front court size and depth this may be a decent strategic move and could pay off nicely if he lives up to the potential many believed he had when he verballed to WVU. I ad heard they were looking at him but did't know it had progressed to this.

Don't know about this kid. Have to wait and see.
Size is good, but who cares how tall someone is when they sit down all game. The only blocks he'll get that way are the views from the good seats. Sure hope this guy bucks the trend. |

Understandable response. Jucos aren't what they used to be. However, I think we also have to consider the style of play and the length he'll add. Mbodj is a big dude, he'll tire. With this guy potentially rotating in, we stay big and don't have to rotate either Jackson or Rubles to the 5. If he's even servicable at his spot, it changes the dynamic completely. We're suddenly a tall ass team. This is a very big(no pun) deal.
If he isn't though, we're right back where we were obviously. It was good to see him do well against a D-1 school, in Morehead State. Question is, will he be able to hold his ground against higher tier competition? My only concern is his weight. Dude needs to pack on a few. Then again, those videos are months old. He already may have... He'll have 2 years of eligibility. Last edited by Gnomey; 07-31-2012 at 11:11 AM. |
