From 2009

South Florida is never short on explosive playmakers in each class, and one of the more explosive prospects in the 2011 class resides at Gulliver Prep. The Raiders’ Tacoi Sumler measures in at 5-foot-9, 165-pounds, so with his small stature he must rely on his speed to be effective on the football field. Speed does not seem to be a problems for Sumler who blazed a 4.33 second forty time at the National Underclassmen Combine in February.

“Well, God blessed me with speed, so I use it,” said Sumler. “Basically, I just use my speed to get behind the secondary. That’s basically what I do and just try to make plays whenever I can make them.”

Sumler sees time at receiver, return man, and cornerback for Gulliver Prep, and is being looked as mainly a slot receiver and return specialist by colleges. Plenty of schools have come through with offers including South Carolina, Ole Miss, West Virginia, Tennessee, FIU, Florida State and Tulane. Outside of those schools that have offers, Sumler hears from Clemson, Iowa, Florida, USF, and Miami as well.

Sumler is taking each offer in stride and not giving any one school the edge.

“Every school that shows me interest, I’m showing them interest back.”

While he does not name any favorites, Sumler knows what he is looking for in a university.

“First of all, everything is academics, because my mom is an elementary school teacher so academics always come first,” said Sumler. “After that, it would probably be like the environment of the school and of course playing time. Also would like them to have my preferred major, which is business and finance.”

Sumler recently took an unofficial visit teammate and Tulane commit Michael Strauss for the Green Wave’s game against BYU.

“I took an unofficial with my quarterback Michael Strauss to Tulane. The trip was an overall success. The game unfortunately wasn’t, but it shows they need play makers. Maybe I can step in.”

Sumler has 20 catches for 389 yards and 8 touchdowns so far on the season, but he’s still has aspects of his game he is trying to improve.

Interview from 2009

Tacoi Sumler: All I do is train hard. I listen to what my dad tells me, which is when everyone else is playing video games or sleeping, I need to practice or study.

MY: Your all around numbers were off the charts! You had a 31.5 inch vertical, 9’10 broad jump while running NFL like times of a 4.31 shuttle and 4.33 40. With immense overall abilities, describe the things that Tacoi Sumler does on the football field.

TS: I make plays, that’s just me! They call me primetime and showtime. When my team needs me, I’m there! The 31’5 doesn’t explain my jumping because when balls in the, air I get there. My speed is always visible in the field because I blow past defenders. I like to be athletic.

Tacoi Sumler is no ordinary guy and no ordinary wide receiver. Even the name is out of the ordinary. Have you met any Tacois lately? So when it's time to perform, Sumler stays consistent and does things that no ordinary football player can do. I witnessed this first hand at last month's Under Armour Combine at the Miami Dolphin's training facility.

With many of the athletes on hand putting up average 40 yard times, in steps Sumler to heat up the field in a blistering 4.33 laser time. Sumler didn't stop there, putting up strong numbers in the three-cone, vertical, and standing broad jump.

When you perform like Sumler does at combines and produce the way he produces on the field (over 1,400 yards and 27 TDs in the last two years), college football programs come calling. Sumler has fielded more scholarship offers than you can shake a stick at with notable programs like Florida St., Oregon, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Auburn laying their cards on the table.

With that said, Sumler wants more. When asked what offers he's looking forward to, he quickly responded. "Florida and Cal," Sumler said. "Cal is a come up type of program that should definitely be watched. I like the way they used DeSean Jackson when he was there."

The common concern for West Coast programs when recruiting in the Sunshine State is the distance away from family and the possibility of home sickness. Sumler, once again, displays his failure to be ordinary.

"Distance is not an issue for me. I'll go wherever is best for me," Sumler says. "I have family out there and usually take trips out there and stay with them. I love it out there."

Despite being on the look out for those two schools, Sumler states that there is no leader in his mind and he will have a five to 10 list of teams after the Spring. Sumler also likes the local college in Coral Gables, the Miami Hurricanes. Once a Gulliver Prep Raider, Sumler was within a stone's throw from the University of Miami campus every day.

"Growing up a Miami boy, I've always admired the program but I am still being recruited by them and have yet to been offered."

Sumler's exploits and skills landed him a spot on the South Florida Express 7-on-7 team, a high-profile club consisting of the best of the best in South Florida area high school talent. The team, run by local sports enthusiast Brett Goetz, features some of the top players in the class of 2011 of which Sumler belongs. The team travels to Tampa this weekend to do battle in the annual University of South Florida 7-on-7 tournament.

It's a chance for Sumler to give fans, opposing players, and scouts a preview of what he will do in 2010.

Sumler's transfer from Gulliver Prep to Columbus means no more spread attack, which is very friendly for wide outs. However, Sumler sees this as a great opportunity.

"That'll just make me a complete receiver," Sumler said. "I'll just have to make plays when I do get the ball and I get to show my blocking skills."

From May '10...

“I have so many schools calling me I just don’t remember them all to be honest, I am sure if I made a list I would forget some,” admitted a very thankful Sumler.

Sumler (Miami, FL/ Columbus HS) would later list off Clemson, Florida State, Auburn, Duke, Louisville, Oregon, Purdue, Rutgers, South Carolina, South Florida, UCF, FIU, Wake Forest, Stanford, Cal, and Tennessee as just some of the colleges all across the nation that want him to take his speed and ability to score in a blink of an eye to their school.

As a junior at Gulliger Prep in Miami Sumler Sumler did everything in terms of offense and colleges are looking for him to do the same.

Sumler is currently practicing in his high school’s spring practice and has had an attitude of getting better the best he can.

“Ya we actually have our spring game coming up shortly and I think I’ve been working a lot of extra work and such,” says Sumler. “I’ve been working really hard on getting better at blocking on the line and away from the play and keep getting better. A lot of coaches have asked me to get better at blocking and to show them I have the heart to do that. I actually just went out to the park with my dad to work on that area as well.”

Sumler has already been busy this summer.

“I’ve visted Florida State, Clemson, FIU, UCF, and South Carolina and while I visited those schools as well as the other ones I am looking at all have their own positives and negatives and I am just sorting those out,” says Sumler.

Sumler currently doesn’t have any plans for visits this summer but things could be in the works.

“Right now my Father and I are going to sit down soon and discuss about our options of visiting schools,” says Sumler. “I want to try and get out to the west coast and make a swing up that coast and see all the big schools out there. You know Cal, Oregon, UCLA, USC, and all that.”

Two schools who have offered Sumler are Vanderbilty and Duke and while they might not be power house programs in college football they are a statement that Sumler’s grades are in order.

“My GPA right now is a 3.45 and I took the SAT May 1st but I am still waiting for those results,” says Sumler.

“Education will be my first area of concern when picking a school because that is why I am going to school,” says Sumler. “I want to major in business or sports management and see what I can do with that degree after college. I am also going to look at the depth chart because I want to go somewhere that gives me a chance to make an impact as a freshman. Now I am not saying I want to start or anything I just want to go somewhere that allows me a chance to prove myself on the field and if I am good enough I will be able to help the team in any way possible.”

“Tennessee actually has some new coaches up there and to be honest they have really surprised me with all the attention they are giving me,” said Sumler. “I recently got a packet of letters from the entire coaching staff and it was all hand written and not from a computer and that got my eye alot. They also have a lot of good players and some of the best fans while having a top program. It’s a school I will consider.”

One of the top receivers from the Sunshine State is four-star receiver Tacoi Sumler (Miami, Fla./ Columbus), who is a speedy athlete that brings explosiveness to any offense. Over the past five days, Sumler has taken a trip out West and seen a handful of Pac-10 schools.

"I am out on the West Coast over the past five days and have seen USC, UCLA, Cal and Stanford," Sumler said. "I have really enjoyed this trip and seeing all of these schools.

"I was really impressed with USC. They are going through some tough times but they will get over the hump. Those coaches are pretty fired up about everything and they will get through this.

WR Tacoi Sumler (5-8 165) of Miami has been out west since June 16 visiting family. While on the trip, he took the opportunity to visit Southern Cal, UCLA, California, Stanford, and Oregon. "Stanford and Oregon stood out the most," said Sumler. "Stanford has a huge, beautiful campus and you can't beat the academics. Oregon seemed like the best fit for me academically and athletically." Sumler returns east on July 11 and says he will begin to narrow his list then. Sumler has offers from 34 schools that include USC, Clemson, UCLA, Cal, Oregon, Florida State, Tennessee, Stanford, Nebraska, Rutgers, Ole Miss, Auburn, and Cincinnati. He has already visited both USC and Clemson and says he hopes to make it back. "I like both of them," he said. "They are in my top 15." As a junior, he caught 54 balls for 998 yards and 17 touchdowns. He does not have a favorite nor does he have a timeframe as to when he plans to commit. "When it feels right and I know that's the school for me, I'll make that decision," said Sumler.
