When is the last time we lost 3 in a row...let alone 3 in a row all by 20+? This is awful.

Just horrific. By my count, we returned 6 starters from a pretty good defense last year. That should be more than enough to not be the worst defense in FBS football. Yes, we are the worst defense in the FBS.
Last season, we only gave up over 400 yards 3 times. Our defense's worst game of the season was at Illinois, where we gave up 522 yards and 45 points. We have already given up more yards than that 4 out of 5 games this season and have only been able to hold 2 MAC schools under 40. Outside of Ohio State, none of the teams we have faced are any better than the teams we were playing last year. This mess is ultimately on Tuberville's hands. At minimum, both defensive coordinators should be fired. If Tuberville's buyout is restrictive, then he gets at most one more season to prove why he shouldn't be sent packing as well. This program was built on hungry, up-and-coming coaches. Even if they used us as stepping stones, there is no denying that Dantonio and Kelly built up the program, and Butch Jones at worst didn't screw it up. I really try not to overreact, but no good coach should have a defense this bad on his watch. Teams returning 6 starters on defense don't slide from 327 yds/gm and 22.0 pts/gm to 574 yds/gm and 40.8 pts/gm. 5 games is more than a large enough sample to determine the defense is a dumpster fire, and this one's on the coaches. Time to start over with a young coach who has something to prove. |

I could live with 2-3 if our defense even slightly resembled something bordering competitive. 2-3, and we nearly lost the 2 we won to freaking Toledo and Miami (OH). Our best chances to win are SMU and UConn. We may lose the rest, to finish 4-8 in the AAC. At least the 4-8 team Butch Jones fielded played in a real conference and was competitive.

Hopefully Tubs gets rid of the entire defensive coaching staff. I would like to see a whole new staff including head coach but I just don't see them getting rid of him after this year. It is evident to me that he isn't getting the job done. These guys look clueless on defense. They were seeking out blockers rather than trying to elude them and getting to the ball yesterday. Talent is not the issue. Our recruiting hasn't gotten worse and our competition hasn't gotten better (save Ohio State). So why does the team look clueless? Coaching. It starts at the top.

I will add, it will be interesting to see the crowds the rest of the year. They've sold some tickets, but how many no-shows will we have? This program absolutely will not thrive in mediocrity and definitely won't as a bottom feeder.
