I view ratings/rankings on the large scale as sort of like a lottery system. The higher rated the guy is, the better your odds he will turn out great. But virtually any player can still be a bust. For a coach it's about being able to evaluate players and project where they will be at in 1-4 years (or more if you are looking at HS juniors/sophomores). Ratings start to become irrelevant on the individual level due to their worse ability to judge player personality, work ethic and project into the future. Not only that, but ratings bounce around a lot and vary widely by service. Look at Samari Curtis who has been as low as 230 (4/3/2018) and reach 92 just over 2 months later and is now back at 180 (on 247 composite), but is ranked 119 by 247. Any guy you have to do your diligence, but especially for a lower rated guy. There is usually a reason for a low rating (though some guys do slip through the cracks). The goal is to find guys who's issues are things you can work with and fix and who you can develop. As I've said before, I'm not sure Brannen will lean more towards skills over athleticism. He may go for even more extreme athleticism, believing he can teach the offense. Athletes are also just more valuable then skilled players due to the fact that you can teach them skills. If we do go more towards skilled players it won't be a huge shift, but more guys of the Cumberland type (though not as skilled as Cumberland) who are above average, but not great athletes and more skilled as players. |

If we are going to be really good...I think we have to be sub 50 at both. I think there was a stat a while back that no recent team had won a national championship if they didn't have one of either of the following combinations. Either a top 22 offense AND defense...or a combination of a top 10 offense or defense as long as the other was not worse than 42nd. That stat may or may not have changed in the past couple of years I haven't checked. Cronin was a perennial top 22 defense but he never really got in the range of top 22 offense so he would never qualify there. He had been #2 on D and 49 on O. He had been #34 on O and #15 on D. Never under 22 in both and never top 10 in one and top 42 in the other. Both of those were very close years to make the cut. If Brannen wants to make it big time he has to give us top 22 in both offense and defense or he has to have a top 10 offense with a low 40's D. That is a lot to ask to be sure. Last year there were 14 teams that would make the cut under these parameters. Either top 22 in both or top 10 in one and top 42 in the other. |

The rankings. Not trying to be too hard on Shaq cuz he wasn’t that bad, but Sanders barely looked like a D1 player let alone a 4 star, and Lawrence couldn’t even hack it at Manhattan. Guys like Dixon and Parker were leaps ahead of these guys with lower rankings.

Lawrence
I went and watched Lawrence in High School. He was a stiff and afraid to go inside. Many in here showed me no mercy as they trusted Mick's evaluation. That is, until they saw him play for themselves. Stars do mean something at times, but times are different too often.

If recruiting is the ultimate factor in winning the conference then we should go ahead and void next season.....Memphis landed Boogie Ellis. Penny is on a recruiting tear. I just want some residual recruiting affects from them right now.
