How do we copy X - free throws

How can UC upgrade it’s free throw shooting to the level of Xavier? What do they do to be so good? Do they work with some FT guru or something? That’s a serious question. They win games that way (see Marquette et al.) They are over 80% as a team! Top couple of teams in the nation.
Does UC have a system? Other than just shoot a bunch. Is there an approach that emphasizes technique?
I guarantee you that a few games, will come down to FTs. That’s an area entirely under the team’s control...doesn’t matter who the opponent is. Florida: 14-17, Cats: 6-10.. forget how many attempts, just flip the percentage of makes & UC wins that game.
So, do they have a plan? Is it a priority? Or are we like the fb team that kind of practices special teams, but without a real focus on repeatable technique? Anyone know?

Well last year they were 68.8 as a team.

It's not like this is some long standing tradition of elite ft shooting, unless they had a major overhaul in their system this year.

It's also a lot to do with Goodin being 89% (seems likely to regress based off last year and that he shot just over 70% as a hs senior.)

Kanter is also in the 80s after being in the 60's his whole career, so that seems likely to regress too.

Both of those guys have taken just under 40 FTs. O'Mara is at 90% on around 30 attempts after spending his whole career in the 60's.

Seems like a combination of having good shooters (Macura/Bluiet) and other guys running hot in small samples.

That or they brought in someone new who is the FT shooting instructor god.

They came up with a really good idea on The Skinny Podcast. They say maybe try shooting them in practice when you're tired??? That way it simulates the way you'd be in a game. Groundbreaking stuff really. I can't figure out why coaches aren't following this advice. But maybe Rick talked to Mack and let him in on the secret? Who knows? But it seems to be working...and apparently we're stuck shooting them all in practice when not tired at all...

everybody on their team is up at least 12% on their FT's except Macura and Gates who are +7 and +9 %.

its pretty crazy. both teams basically shot the same percent last year.

Gary is up 15% over last year. Cumberland is shooting just over 55%...ridiculous. This is one of those areas Cronin needs to improve his team. Most of this is on the players...but we need to look at new ways from a coaching standpoint to get the team better.

I am a golfer so I like golf analogy. Most of the pros have a sports psychologist type of person to help with the mental aspect of the game. Are you thinking about what will happen if you miss or are you going up there thinking solely about form or making the shot. In golf sometimes a bad thought like "I need to avoid the water" can lead to an over correction missing badly the other way.

Maybe get a sports psychologist in there to work with the team a few times to figure out what is going through each players head when attempting FT's in different situations and teach them how to clear their mind or think more positively. Many players go up there thinking "Oh God I hope I don't miss that will be embarrassing". I don't think the cost would be too high to do this but it could help us get 5% better overall as a team.

Yah...plus UC players have good looking girls to distract them. When there is a sea of ugly behind the net...you can focus on the rim.

I have a friend inside the program who says every time Xavier misses a free throw, Mack forces them to dress like his wife and he has his way with them. Quinten goodin got tired of the pummeling Mack was giving him last year and he could barely walk straight. All the sudden he is an elite FT shooter.

Pretty sure it’s accurate but can’t 109% confirm
