Big Day (and Weekend) for National Recruiting

Today is a big day for recruiting across the nation.

Brandon Knight, a 6'3 point guard from Pine Crest (FL) who is currently ranked #1 will pick between Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Syracuse, and UConn. The Wildcats are a heavy favorite, though the Gators and Huskies have an outside shot.

Currently at #37, 6'1 point guard Ray McCallum of Detroit Country Day School (MI) will select from Arizona, Detroit, Florida, and UCLA. Detroit, where his father Ray McCallum, Sr. is the head coach is believed to be his choice.

Mount Pleasant (MI) 6'4 shooting guard Trey Zeigler, who is ranked #45, is deciding between a number of schools, including Central Michigan, Duke, Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma, and UCLA. The Chippewas are expected to land him, as his father, Ernie Zeigler, is the head coach. (He announced for Central Michigan)

Michael Gilchrist '11 of St. Patrick's (NJ), the best player in America regardless of class, is surprisingly announcing his college choice tomorrow. The 6'7 combo forward will listed six schools when I spoke with him in February : Georgia Tech, Michigan, Oregon, Kentucky, Texas, and Villanova. The superstar from the Garden State is expected to choose between Kentucky and Villanova, who have long been rumored to have a leg up on the competition. Kentucky is the consensus favorite here, though Villanova does have a shot.

In addition to the three elite seniors announcing today, two more will come off the board on Saturday at the Jordan Brand Classic. Currently ranked #6 in Northstar Basketball's Class of 2010 Terrific 125, 6'2 combo guard Josh Selby of Lake Clifton (MD) will pick from Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and UConn. A one-time Tennessee pledge, Selby is a considered a heavy lean and there he will likely be choosing the Jayhawks.

Also announcing at the JBC is #13 Doron Lamb, a 6'4 shooting guard from Oak Hill Academy (VA). The New York City native is considering four of the same schools as Selby in Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, and UConn, but also has West Virginia on his list, and St. John's may be involved too. Kansas is considered the leader here, but Lamb's recruitment is tough to read and Arizona, Kentucky, and West Virginia all have legitimate chances.

Good stuff, but:

Sullinger has already committed to Ohio State and made it clear he is attending Ohio State.......why hold a press conference?

Same with Harrison Barnes and Zeigler.

Probably because there may not be a lot of high profile players committing today and they already have the TV time slotted.
