I am from central Illinois and followed Austin's high school career and recruitment. While talented with the ball and a fierce competitor, his shooting is a liability and his inconsistent scoring kept him from being an elite prospect. Since we desperately need a shooter, Austin was not the guard to target.

Cobb will be much more than a role player. If you saw him drop 22 on Kansas you saw that he is a big time scorer. There is no one on our roster who could have done that. He'll see a majority of minutes split across PG and SG

I have my expectations set fairly low next year for Cobb (as I also do for all of the incoming players). I think we all would agree that Caupain had a fairly impactful freshman year, but even at that, he averaged 5.4 ppg along with 2 assists per game.
It seems like very few first year players have had a significant impact in their first year here. Other than Stephenson and perhaps Yancy, what other 1st year players had a solid 1st year? I think you almost have to go all the way back to Devon Downey for another player that fits this mold. I really hope Cobb has a very good year, but for a JUCO that appears to have been very lightly recruited (other than San Francisco, was UC his only other offer), I will expect a bench role for him next year along with <5 ppg. And I think the chances are much greater that we'll see a breakout season from one of the experienced upperclassmen (Sanders, Thomas, or Guyn) than we'll see this from any of the newcomers. |
